Why I Would Never Buy A Razer Tablet Computer

CES is the birthplace of many gadgets and gizmos; 2012 seems to be the year of the tablet, as we see a number of companies touting to finally have an iPad alternative, worthy of you hard earned cash. This year we had a surprise announcement from Razer; Project Fiona is a full blown PC gaming tablet that claims to be powerful enough to run "current generation PC games". After weeks of viral marketing, and insignificant teasing, am I supposed to be compelled by this new product?

Well Razer, I'm not. You would have to be crazy to purchase an expensive, computer-based device from a peripheral company, particularly one with a reputation as questionable as Razer's.

Questionable reputation? Let's take a brief look at the history of Razer, and their convoluted product line-up before we delve into their latest releases. Razer was a small company that started out in 1998, before falling into dormancy until the mid 2000s. Known for their flashy PC peripherals, Razer announced a launch into the console market in 2009, releasing two controllers for the Xbox 360 and a headset.

The issue is that more often than not, Razer's peripherals are nothing more than overpriced garbage. The Razer Onza Xbox 360 controller asks for a premium price, however it delivers a cheap and unreliable experience for gamers. Many blogs, review outlets and rumblings online have reported issues with analogue sticks, audio feedback and button faults - an issue we experienced after just 3 weeks with our review unit.

Razer mice are notorious for tracking issues. The Viper, Copperheard, Microsoft Habu and Krait have all been reported to lose their tracking easily when being moved at high speeds. When you're paying top dollar for a product, you want unrivalled performance. Along with their questionable peripherals, Razer's software that comes bundled with their products, are nothing more than bloatware.

Not to mention that there was a huge debacle with the Copperhead and its customisable weight system. Razer promoted the use of weights in the product, yet voided all warranty claims for those mice that used official Razer weights.

To think that what is supposed to be a high performance gaming company, is now taking a hand at developing PC-based hardware is hilarious. If they can't make their "high-performance" gaming peripherals function correctly, how are we supposed to trust them with a tablet computer?

Despite my lack of confidence about Razer's ability to deliver a high-end gaming tablet that I'd be happy forking over my cash for, is there even a market for such a device? While it would be nice to get a quick game of Super Meat Boy in on the train ride to work every morning, would a hardcore PC gamer be even interested in this device.

PC gamers usually aren't fans of console gaming for a number of reasons - graphical power, customisation, controls etc. Playing your favourite PC game on a touchscreen tablet, and using controller like inputs doesn't exactly sound appealing from a PC gamer perspective.

I'm not saying that Razer can't make good products - the Black Widow keyboard is one of the better mechanical keyboards on the market at that price point, however I would never trust a shoddy peripheral company with something as important as a tablet computer.

The question is, would you?

Now that tablets are becoming more mainstream, especially with the "one tablet for every child" initiative, you'll see companies like Razer enter into the business. The mouse was once also a niche product made by a few...before the likes of Razer came in with affordable, but lesser-quality products.

I wouldn't buy a Razer tablet, no.

I really just don't get this sort of thing. Hardcore PC gamer here, and someone who uses public transit all the smegging time, but this (or any other "tablet") is not appealing in the least.

Heller K:142768 12/01/2012
I just don't see consumers or developers embracing this device. Look at their motion sensing product for PC.....I bet that sold really well. I used it at E3 and it was a joke, not to mention the limited title support for the thing.

You mentioned that they're known for poorer quality peripherals, list old peripherals ('Cept the onza) and then went to say that the Blackwidow is one of the best mechanical keyboards? Dude.

I said it is one of the best at its price point - it is a cheap unit that is actually quite decent. The rest of their keyboard and mouse lineup plain sucks.

Those older units are still being sold on store shelves, their black mamba mouse is horrid.

*waits for barrage of abuse over the Blackwidow comment*

:P

*Ok I'll join in*

Blackwidows are definitely not one of the better mech keyboards at that price point.

$150 = Cheap? You can get any number of quality, reliable branded keyboards for the same or less - Leopold, Filco, Ducky, Das etc

Marge K:22369 12/01/2012
people just buy Razer items because the brand has a cool name. Surely noone slightly informed picks them over Mionix, Steelseries, leopold etc.
Makra
Makra K:20865 12/01/2012
Ok so I just found out the Ultimate BW is $150 but the standard BW goes for about $110. That does limit the scope a bit, but there are still MUCH better keyboards you can get for that price point.
Heller
Heller K:142768 12/01/2012
For $110 mechanical keys? I don't think so and the BW is quite decent for that price IMO.

When you compare it to a SteelSeries or Leopold though, it might as well come from the Reject Shop.

I'd consider buying one to be honest, on the condition it had full steam support.

The price point is under 1000 use, razer said.. that's only a couple of hundred more than an ipad once was.. depending on the operating system and steam implementation, I'd give this a look. Tablets arent just for the bus or train..

Heller K:142768 12/01/2012
But if a PC gamer is at home, are they going to choose their tablet over their PC?

And if theyre not at home? Or in a situation where moving is frequent and a laptop for gaming or tower PC is not practical? There are so many people this could appeal to thanks to the boom in tablet.. tablets are mobile platforms, and so this is a truly mobile gaming pc... tablet.. its not that bad an idea.. assuming competent implementation of software.

My issues would be with the control.

Let's just say that Portal 2 is $30 across PS3/Xbox 360/PC.

If price wasn't an issue, I'd pick it up on my PC purely on controls alone. The graphical difference for that game doesn't sway my decision, but using a KB&M is my preferred control method.

Now playing it on a small screen, with weird analogue sticks, or using a touch-screen does not appeal to me at all. If I use my "gaming tablet" as a primary gaming source, I'd much prefer to play it on a 360.

Steam integration would be good, but Razer make peripherals, not hardware. It would be like Activision saying "Hey, we're going to make our own console".....
Harry
Harry K:62240 12/01/2012
Controls can be changed between KB and mouse and control sticks or something.. get a roll out KB, a ten dollar wireless mouse and you get better control than dual shock gives.. efficient use of space, etc.

We will have to wait and see, but I wouldn't be bagging it before it comes out..

Could you please add the article tagline: "A peripheral company making a tablet computer is like Apple making.......[something]" into the article, it was too long to fit in the box AND I NEED TO KNOW WHAT THE END WAS! :'@ X_X

"A peripheral company making a tablet computer is like Apple making airplanes."

Or like an online retailer making a tablet... except even less likely...

These days, you don't even need to know how to make the tablet to order one; the manufacturer has preset options for the tablet. Razer has experience making hardware (it's their entire business) so they're much better suited to making a tablet than, say, Amazon. I don't think Razer making the tablet should be a negative; in fact, it should be a positive. (*)

SONY K:48813 13/01/2012
Didn't Razer get the memo saying that pretty much every tablet with windows and x86 processor sucks?

I'm pretty sure that there may be PC gamers who think that this is usefull, but that will only be a small group. And I don't think that Razer realises how small that group is if its saying stuff like "Razer expects developers to tailor titles just to suit the combination of hardware on offer".

Hey Razer!!!! Where's my switchblade and that big gaming notebook thing that looks like giant version of the switchblade?
Pro-tip: Why don't you actually release one big product before announcing another?

This might end up as vaporware, imo.

Everyone seems to dig into Razer Products waaay too much. I've had my Naga Epic for like a year and there has been no issues what so ever. I had a Copperhead in 2007-2009, and then a Deathadder from 2009-2011 and they all had no issues, just the way I played games changed significantly and I was upgrading my peripherals. Keyboard wise I've had a G15 since 2007, and upgraded to a BlackWidow Ultimate in 2010 and haven't looked back since then.

Razer do make good products, even the ONZA I've had for atleast 9 months and it hasn't broken. Every company has faults, Razer more so then others because they mass produce their products with cheap materials. Doesn't mean I won't buy them.

I'll be looking at getting one of these tablets.

Uh, I never said once that I had problems with them, all of them are in their boxes in my cupboard still in working condition.
Marge
Marge K:22369 13/01/2012
then why are you replacing them with another thing every 2 years? Surely there'd be no reason to replace a well functioning product.

But yea i get that there are some people that like Razer and don't have problems, but primarily those are the people that like the name or design and don't do that much research. Pretty much everything at the same price point as a Razer is better then it

Razer: "Look at my sweet glowing lights and black with matte black finish. I must be both functional and expensive!".

Bells and whistles, but no substance really.

Upgrading my peripherals. Why else?
I replace all of my peripherals every 2 years generally regardless of whether it's working or not because I just want the latest stuff. Spoilt child syndrome if you will.

I like Razer, and not one of their products I have ever purchased has ever broken, nor had a fault.

Gotta ask, what mechanical keyboard is worse than the BlackWidow? Its ****ing terrible!

And look:
www.pccasegear.com/...

Those are re-branded Filcos. $99.00.
Makra

Re-branded really? It looks quite different to my majestouch tenkeyless. E.g. Mine doesn't have that recess underneath, cable isn't removable etc.

But yeah, there aren't any I can think of that are much worse. Perhaps the Xarmor's are, but they also try to be all fancy with backlights etc.
